With a loaded field of teams, this list includes a few of the top sophomores in the entire nation. As the Swish N’ Dish featured an incredibly long list of talented players, here are the ones that really stood out at the 16U level.
Darrin Ames - 2023 - PG - Mac Irvin Fire
Ames has remarkable handle and moves with the basketball. Defenders all weekend were having issues of sticking with him with his ability to stop and start plus shifty moves. He is a very good finisher around the basket for his size and hit several shots from the outside. Ames also showed to be one of the better passers at the entire tournament.
Layden Blocker - 2023 - PG - Brad Beal Elite
The highly touted sophomore is a skilled two-way guard. He is very quick off the dribble and just explodes to the basket to get plenty of paint touches where he does a nice job finishing as well as creating for his teammates. He excelled on the opposite end playing lockdown defense on opposing guards.
Xavier Booker - 2023 - F/C - George Hill All Indy
A lengthy 6’11” big man with great upside that already makes a big impact on the floor. He moves well given his size patrolling the defensive paint to defend opposing bigs and stop any drivers. He works hard on the defensive end to contest any shots around the paint. The athletic big man was able to finish on a high percentage of his paint touches.
Kaleb Glenn - 2023 - F - Brad Beal Elite
Glenn is a strong and athletic 6’7” forward. The sophomore attacked the basket well off the dribble too and also scored with his back to the basket. He showed a great ability to score around the paint, finishing right through or over defenders. As well, Glenn was one of the top rebounders at the event who battled extremely hard for every single board.
Jalen Griffith - 2023 - PG - Meanstreets
A quality playmaking point guard that is extremely difficult to defend off the dribble. He has elusive moves with his ability to changes speeds and explode past defenders to often be getting into the paint. He is a smart and crafty player that always knows where to go with the ball and has great passing ability to set up his teammates often for easy baskets.
Jalen Hooks - 2023 - G/F - George Hill All Indy
A good size and lengthy 6’7” wing that plays with a good motor and great skills. He scored the ball well attacking the basket and can be an incredibly tough matchup with his size, skill set, and athleticism. Hooks also showed the ability to spot up and hit the three. So many tools to his game and it’s easy to see what he is a top 50 national talent.
Antwan Jones - 2023 - G - JH1 Elite
Jones is an athletic guard that is a skilled and efficient scorer. The sophomore is at his best attacking the basket but can also knock down shots from the perimeter. He is smooth with the ball and has some quickness, plus he is a strong finisher when he gets to the basket. He proved to be a good decision maker with the ball in his hands.
JJ Taylor - 2023 - G/F - Mac Irvin Fire
Taylor already possesses a great skill set in addition to his 6’8” height and high-level athleticism. He moves so well with the ball and has tremendous moves to get to the basket often and finish strong at the rim. The elite scorer also got it done from the outside hitting threes off the catch and dribble.
Asa Thomas - 2023 - G/F - Illinois Wolves
Even with plenty of attention on him, Thomas shot the ball extremely well from deep with his pure jumper. At 6’6” with good length, he has little issue getting his shot off and hit some tough contested jumpers. While he’s at his best knocking down shots from the outside, he can also handle the ball and get to the basket. Thomas is a high IQ wing that knows how to play.
Prentice Young Jr. - 2023 - G - Phenom University
The skilled guard scored the ball at a high rate at the basket as well from the mid-range. He does a good job of beating defenders with his good moves with the ball or can simply overpower them with his strong build. Young finishes very well around the basket in addition to being able to pull up and knock down jumpers with a good stroke.
